Sooty is currently the Special Advisor on Culture and Community Development to the Nevis Island Administration.  His career spans several years in the teaching profession and he was Director of the Department of Culture from 1993 through 2002.  He also served as Chairperson of the CULTURAMA annual festival from 1993 through 1998, appointed again in 2006 where he continues to serve in that capacity.  Sooty is considered to be ‘the expert’ on cultural preservation in Nevis and, in fact, is known as ‘Mr. Culture.’  He is also a student of Black history and Caribbean culture.
